Consume Something Real

July 8, 2026 · 2 min read

"How much time he gains who does not look to see what his neighbour says or does or thinks, but only at what he does himself, to make it just and holy."

— Marcus Aurelius, Meditations, 4.18

Like many, I have the daily habit of diving into YouTube or Instagram and getting lost in videos and reels. The algorithms never tire of serving content up according to your latest interests, and soon you’re in a doom spiral reviewing 100 different Elden Ring builds for your next playthrough, or investment hacks you have heard several times over.

And it hit me…

It’s okay to go back to old school. In fact, it’s probably a necessity. The constant bombardment of content in short bite-sized servings really just keeps me on the hamster wheel, going too fast and going in a circle. I want to move forward, I want to experience something, I want to learn something. The answer is more than obvious.

Read a book.

Play a game.

Listen to an album.

Take a course.

This was my challenge to myself to get away from the spin and make an investment in something that is going to give me a satisfying experience, and I might even learn something as well.

We’ll see how it goes in the weeks ahead…
